Goals of the LGBTQ Movement

Key Goals of the LGBTQ Movement

Civil Rights:

For the longest time people in the LGBTQ movement were not allowed to out and open about sexual orientation. While it is still not easy to be in the LGBT community it is more accepted than it use to be. The main goal of the movement is to have the same rights as everyone else. They believe that they should not be discriminated against in society. They should be able to be who they are and be with the person(s) that they love.

Marriage Equality:

Fortunately, this a reality for the LGBTQ Community. This was a long and tenuous fight. Because LGBT couples were not married they did not have the same benefits. For example, because LGBT couples were not able to be married they would not be able to see their loved one if they were in the hospital because they were not, "family" or "Relatives". By being married they would be able to have governmental, health and security benefits.

Reproductive & Adoptive Rights:

The LGBT Community believed that they deserved the right to have children. It was easier for LGBT couples to use a Sperm Bank or a surrogate rather than adopting. Many states were restrictive when it came to LGBT couples adopting children. Agencies were able to discriminate against a couple if they believed it went against their beliefs. It was not until 2016 that LGBT individuals would be able to adopt from all fifty states.

Transgender Rights:

While the acceptance of gay and lesbian individuals have been on the rise, the same cannot be said for the Transgender community. The Trump Administration has deliberately trying to discriminate against the trans community. In March 2018, Trump proposed a bill that would ban Transgender individuals from serving in the military. This would cause public outrage and defense for the Trans community.
